AI vs Curriculum
Most, if not all, curriculum and instructional resources are very linear in nature. It has one learning path and one standard for the time it should take to master and move on to the next set of learning targets. I think the shift towards personalized learning and the potential that artificial intelligence has to broaden the scope of access to personalized learning means that the way we choose or build curriculum will soon have to follow suit. The way we frame our thinking around the design of curriculum and resources will be able to expand beyond a rote trajectory of how concepts should be learned and more of a focus on a lateral approach to practical learning targets that meet the needs of the world k-12 students will enter when they leave our doors. Over the course of the last century, we have slowly been moving/inching away from the single schoolroom model where every child learns the same thing the same way. Technology and an understanding of cognitive psychology have taught us to differentiate, intervene, and progress monitor but limited resources and human power limit how far we can honor what we know about good teaching and learning. Technology, used correctly, can propel this progress at a rate we probably cannot comprehend right now.
